The Trustee For Henry Parkes Foundation
Dedicated to Henry Parkes’ vision for a just, open and equitable society, the Foundation’s activities aim to enhance Australians’ understanding of the political and constitutional systems that underpin Australian democracy, as well as to encourage people to participate productively in civic life. In 202223 the Foundation held the 20th annual oration. The Orator was Emeritus Professor Judith Brett who discussed the subject of How good are Australians at elections. Driven by radical young colonists like Henry Parkes, the Australian colonies were pioneers of democratic elections, adopting manhood suffrage and the secret ballot and establishing nonpartisan electoral administrations. The oration was live streamed and available on YouTube. https://youtu.be/f34o3NJz1E8?t=349 https://parkesfoundation.org.au/2002oration The Foundation made a donation to the Museum of Australian Democracy as well as the State Library of New South Wales, Both of these institutions have in their collections original Henry Parkes material which show Henry’s link with the development of the democratic process in NSW and his work in bringing about the Federation of the Colonies.
