K9s 4 Valour Incorporated
Founded in 2015, K9s 4 Valour s aim is to support first responders living with PTSD live productive lives. We have done that through raising awareness of the symptoms of PTSD and by promoting the benefits of assistance dogs, and improving the quality of dogs trained in this area. We have also promoted the improvement of legislation for Assistance/Service dogs in Victoria to regulate training and assessment and introduce public awareness campaigns on the importance of Service dogs in the treatment of PTSD and other medical conditions. Significant donations in recent years allowed K9s 4 Valour to revisit its original plan to train and supply PTSD support dogs to first responders, and this year we invested in our first dog, Benny. Unfortunately, due to losing several board and support members due to personal circumstances, we have not been able to dedicate as much time and resources as required towards setting up the framework surrounding assistance dog recipients. Several additional board members have indicated that, due to personal circumstances, they can no longer commit to K9s4Valour in the long term. There are also now many more operators in this field, many of which are far more resourced and established than K9s4Valour. While we feel we have made a worthwhile contribution to raising awareness of PTSD and the benefits of assistance dogs in its treatment, and to advocacy for greater regulation of the industry, we also believe that there are other organisations better placed to continue that journey. To that end, our board members have agreed to another term, during which K9s4Valour will be wound up (by 30/06/2024). During that time we will seek to rehome our assistancedogintraining Benny with a suitable organisation or recipient, and to identify suitable recipient/s of our excess funds which will be donated to one or several organisations whose goals align with ours.
